How do I borrow eBooks or eAudio in the Library Catalog App?

It works very similarly to borrowing from the catalog.  You will need to either read/listen in the appropriate app (or browser for OverDrive Read/Listen).

When you borrow an eBook in the Library Catalog App you're offered the same three options as in the catalog: Adobe Digital Editions, HTML or Kindle.

  • If you choose Adobe Digital Editions, it will send you outside the Catalog app to your browser and offer to download the DRM file--which is only useful if you have Adobe Digital Editions or the OverDrive app on your device.
  • If you choose HTML, it will open the book directly in a browser embedded within the Catalog app and you can begin reading.  (If you wish to actually download to Libby, you'll need to close the Catalog app, open the Libby app and tell it to download so you can read offline.)
  • If you choose Kindle, it will open a browser window within the Catalog app that goes to the Amazon page so you can log in and send the book to whichever of your Kindle devices/apps you wish. Then, you can read the book in that Kindle app or device.

When you find an eAudio, there are two vendors to watch for, OverDrive and RBdigital.

When you borrow an OverDrive eAudiobook, there are two options:

  • If you choose MP3 it will send you outside the Catalog app to your browser and offer to download the MP3--which is useful if you have the OverDrive or Libby apps.
  • If you choose OverDrive Listen, it will open the book directly in a browser/player embedded within the Catalog app and you can begin listening.  (If you wish to actually download to Libby, you'll need to close the Catalog app, open the Libby app and tell it to download so you can listen offline.)

When you borrow an RBdigital eAudiobook, if you select Windows Media Audio (the only option), it will open up a browser within the app to FVRL's RBdigital eAudio site where you can play now.  If you wish to download to the RBdigital app for off-line enjoyment, you'll need to close the Catalog app and open the RBdigital app instead.
