How do I use Libby?

OverDrive offers two apps: the "classic" OverDrive app, which works with almost all devices and computers, and the Libby app, which was designed specifically for phones and tablets.

If you want to read on a Mac, PC or Kindle, please see "How do I use OverDrive?"

Install Libby:

  • Libby is currently available for these devices:
    • iOS 9 or higher
    • Android 4.4 or higher
    • Windows 10 tablet and mobile, OS versions 1607 and 1703
  • Search for "Libby" in your device's app store, install "Libby by OverDrive" and open it. You will see a welcome screen; tap "Hi" to start set up.
  • Tap "Find my Library."  Libby will do a search and suggest possible library branches. Choose "Fort Vancouver Regional Library District."
    • If you do not see FVRL on the list, tap "No" and then tap "No, I'll search for a library." Enter the zip code 98663.
  • You'll be on the OverDrive home screen. Look just above the red "New Additions" stripe on the right side for "Add your Library card" and tap it. Type in your card number and PIN and save.

Borrow a book:

Libby downloads books automatically over wifi, but streams eBooks and audiobooks over a cellular connection.

  • Pick an available book and tap on the book cover to see details (you can also tap on “Borrow” to check the book out immediately.)
  • Find “borrow” underneath the book cover and tap to check out the book. Tap "Borrow" to confirm.
  • You will get a message that the book is checked out, and beneath that, the option to either start reading, or keep browsing.

Holds:

Place a hold:

  • Tap a book cover to read more about a book before placing a hold, or simply tap "Place Hold."
  • Libby will ask you to confirm that you want to place the hold, then place it and offer you the option to go to your shelf or keep browsing.

Suspend a hold:

  • Tap "Shelf," then look at the top of the screen for "Holds" and tap.
  • Find the cover of the book and tap it. You will see the option to "Edit Hold" - tap, then scroll down until you see "Hold State."
  • To the right you'll find "Active" - tap and you will get a menu that allows you to suspend your hold from anywhere between one week to six months.

Change your hold notification email:

  • Tap "Shelf," then look at the top of the screen for "Holds" and tap.
  • Tap the cover of any hold, then tap "Edit Hold."
  • Scroll down until you see "send hold notice to" and tap the box beneath to type in your new email address.
  • Libby will use the new email for all your holds from then on.

Return a title early:

  • Tap "Shelf," then tap the cover of the book.
  • Tap "Return Title Early," and then "Return."
